This is a single-family home near the Santiago neighborhood, designed for someone looking to spend the winter in Mérida. Our goal was to provide a retreat that would offer a respite from everyday life, where the occupant could be in touch with nature and enjoy good ventilation and natural light. The project is centered around a large mango tree and a ciricote tree. Our premise was to provide these two focal points with the setting to create their interplay of light and shadow, while also utilizing them to create microclimates that enhance thermal comfort. The living area is enclosed by glass walls with large windows facing north and east that connect to the gardens, terrace, and pool. The bedroom and bathroom module was designed so that whenever one moves from one space to another, the trees can be enjoyed. The client seeks to spend as much time as possible in the outdoor areas; therefore, the connection between the social and private areas is provided by corridors and an outdoor staircase, ensuring that even when indoors, there is a constant visual connection with the outdoors.
