Located in the historic center of Mérida, this colonial house was in excellent condition—a home that held many fond childhood memories for the client. You could see all those memories in his eyes and smile, and that was our inspiration when designing the space. The architectural brief called for four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom—one of which had direct access from the street so it could be rented out as an Airbnb—as well as a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a terrace with a pool. Our goal was to separate the old structure from the new one using a central courtyard so that the house could be admired from any vantage point. We fully preserved the existing walls and ceilings, contrasting them with the new construction through the use of materials such as chukum walls and polished concrete floors. The central courtyard is the heart of the home—it’s where the house’s social life unfolds. The terrace was covered with a double-height palapa, and the pool was surrounded by vegetation to create a more tropical atmosphere. Without a doubt, this is a home that will continue to create beautiful memories.
