Located in Mérida’s Historic Center, Casa Carolina stems from an interest in reinterpreting traditional Yucatecan housing through a contemporary lens, while respecting the scale, rhythm, and essence of one of the city’s most culturally significant neighborhoods.

The project is based on the idea of preserving the relationship between the built spaces and the interior courtyards—a characteristic element of the region’s architecture that allows for natural light and ventilation throughout much of the year. The sequence of spaces creates a flow where the social areas open up to the outdoors, while the private areas offer seclusion without losing their connection to nature. The architectural design seeks to establish a dialogue between traditional materials and modern solutions. The natural stone walls lend character and durability to the project, while the pasta mosaics evoke the rich craftsmanship typical of the old houses in downtown Mérida. Wood, light-colored finishes, and clean surfaces complement a understated material palette that highlights the light and texture of each space.
